Marketing And Hot Water: Advice from Seth Godin

Marketing And Hot Water: Advice from Seth Godin

From Seth Godin, Author & Speaker on Marketing Topics:

Digital Marketing BlogA Great Metaphor and Question From Seth’s Blog Today:  March 8, 2017

When does the water get hot?

If you want a hot shower, you’ll need to turn on the hot water a bit before you step inside. It can take a while for the hot water to rise up and clear the cold water from the pipes.

The thing is, though, that if you mistakenly turn the cold water tap instead, it’ll never get hot. No matter how long you wait.

Sometimes, it takes us too long to realize that we shouldn’t wait any longer and might consider checking if we turned on the wrong tap.

Nothing good comes from impatiently jumping from one approach to another, one grand scheme replaced by another. But persistently sticking with a plan that goes nowhere is almost as bad. The art of making a difference begins with thinking hard about when it’s time to move on. The Dip is real, but there are dead ends everywhere.

Sometimes, the world is telling us it’s time to leap.

Yes Seth.  Well said.  Thank you for being an inspiration to so many with your metaphors!

For my readers: If you are ready to try something new, to replace something that isn’t working, with regard to Digital Marketing, I can help you with that!  I fix broken web sites.  I redesign web sites that are not working.  I implement organic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and/or paid Search Engine Marketing (SEM) so that web sites I design using WordPress and my Toledo SEO Wizard bag of magic tricks to get google page one top ten search engine rank placement results for clients.  Is it “Time to Leap” as Seth wrote?  Let’s Talk Soon!  See the contact page if you want to ask any questions!

Social Media Marketing Article in February Issue Entrepreneur Magazine

Social Media Marketing Article in February Issue Entrepreneur Magazine

Article Review By BIG Marketing Solutions:

Trends in marketing are very much in the news these days, especially the growth of Social Media Marketing. To explain the phenomenon, Entrepreneur Magazine published “10 Tips For Millennial Marketing” an article on February 9, 2017 sharing that there may be an unheralded digital divide in this respect.  The Millennial generation may actually be avoiding other media while being more likely to respond to properly done social media marketing efforts.

The opening paragraph describes Millennials as “are one of the most talked about generations in the marketing industry…” Then it asks if they are really that different, noting that people have been observing generational differences since 400 BC when “Socrates described teens and young adults like this:

…They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs …” That sounds like any generation of teens and young adults, but Millennials are different than (sic) earlier generations because they grew up with an unmatched presence of technology in their lives — and they are one of the most studied generations because of that.

The article continues by noting that Millennials think differently and act differently, especially with regard to online behavior, because “some things are intuitive to them that are not intuitive to anyone else.”

Many of the differences between the Millennial Generation market segment and others arise because they are the first generation to be digital natives.  Mobile devices are affordable so they are the screen of choice for this generation.  Millennials think the information available on a mobile device is the same as what is found on a desktop computer screen.  Maybe you had heard this, but probably had not heard the following:

According to Google, 66 percent of Millennials are confident that the information they find with mobile devices, such as flight and hotel data, is the same on desktop. Only 43 percent of travelers over the age of 35 feel the same way.

Millennials are very comfortable shopping, and booking travel arrangements, on mobile devices.

According to Google, 64 percent of Millennials book a hotel stay after searching for a room on their mobile device. The majority of travelers over the age of 35 — 58 percent — do not book on mobile.

Millennials do not respond to hard sell pitches because they grew up in an economically challenging time.  They are very comfortable with a sharing economy.  They want companies to share with them, and to collaborate with them in creating the brand experience and speaking the brand message.  “Brands such as L’Oréal, Chanel, Prada and others already understand this and are collaborating with influential bloggers to reach Millennials.  Recruiting thought leaders in a marketing category to initiate and maintain conversations is far more effective with Millennials than running a traditional one way campaign “pitching” a product.  Inspiring User Generated Content takes the game to the next level!

Getting good reviews on social media is reported to be the coin of the realm to generate a purchase decision or brand loyalty among Millennials,  An Omni-Channel or Integrated Marketing Strategy is thought to be the best approach.  An Omni-Channel strategy is one that makes sure that the brand identity, image, positioning, value proposition, and messaging are consistent across various media channels even if the final creative effort or delivery is quite different.  Straight up online advertising does not fare well with Millennials who are thinking about making a purchase.

While a vast number of the population find online advertising to be credible, only six percent of Millennials in the U.S. consider online advertising to be credible.

The importance of inspiring online reviews in social media by brand fans cannot be overstated. The article reports that “Fifty-one percent of Millennials say that being able to see consumer opinions have a greater impact on making a purchase decision.”

Another recommendation is for a company to provide online customer service.  Putting customer service out in public purview shows that the company is not afraid of the conversation that takes place online.  Knowing how to handle this to deliver customer satisfaction for all to see and appreciate is considered a huge influence.

Television may influence consumers making purchase decisions up to 70 percent more than other media, but Social media is closing fast, influencing 60% of Millennials.

Thirty-two percent of that 60 percent say that social advertising is more credible when influencing their decisions. In other words, if your company or brand doesn’t have a social media account, you are missing out on the possibility to engage with Millennials.

Maybe you have heard some of this before, but the statistics cited in the article are more concrete and persuasive than some of the hype that has been shared about the topic.

Toledo Business News: Redevelopment of Once Grand Spaces

What Good Thing Could Come From Toledo?

In the early to mid 1900’s Toledo Ohio was the home of Willys-Overland Motor Company which later went on to become the manufacturer of the Jeep.

Production of the Willys MB, better known as Jeep, began in 1941, shared between Willys, Ford, and American Bantam. 8,598 units were produced that year, and 359,851 units were produced before the end of World War II. Willys-Overland ranked 48th among United States corporations in the value of World War II military production contracts.[7] In total, 653,568 military Jeeps were manufactured. (Wikipedia, 2016).

Since World War II, this site has been at the economic heart of Toledo. (Redevelopment

Jeeps are still made in Toledo, at different facilities.  The original grand factory fell into disrepair and then ruin.  The smokestack still stands as a national landmark. The good news is that the property is being revived again as an industrial park for automobile suppliers. James Tuschman invoked Kevin Costner last week as he talked about the fledgling Overland Industrial Park in Toledo.  “Do you all remember the movie Field of Dreams? ‘Build it and they will come,’ ” asked the chairman of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority. “We did. They’re here.”  (The Toledo Blade, 2016)
Dana Holding Corp.’s will be the first tenant, opening an axle manufacturing plant.  Doing so at a site that was once written off in North Toledo is a major win for the region’s economy and validation of a bold economic development effort begun just after the Great Recession. Not only did Dana announce plans for a $70 million plant that will employ at least 300 people, but the Fortune 500 company will be the first tenant of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority’s Overland Industrial Park..(The Toledo Blade, 2016)

Besides global business and world class art and culture, Toledo also offers one of the most “Affordable” places to live in the great U.S.A. Toledo is a great place to locate a small business because our market demographic mix is a perfect blend of everything that makes America great! Business services such as marketing and advertising also cost less here than in most nearby cities! If you need to reinvent, re-launch, or expand tour business, then Toledo is a great place to work, live, play!

Does your business have a department, marketing program, product, or strategic initiative that has fallen into disrepair?  Perhaps you want to re-invent, revive, re-launch or re-purpose it in a way similar to what is being done with the Willys Overland site?

Now Toledo area business owners can enter a contest to win $500 to $5000 in FREE Digital Marketing Services to re-launch, redevelop, re-brand, or re-message a product or service that may have suffered during the recession.  See Toledo Digital Marketing Services Page For Details

How To Use Google Analytics To Measure Effectiveness of Organic SEO Efforts

How To Use Google Analytics To Measure Effectiveness of Organic SEO Efforts

Google Analytics Key Performance Indicators Measure Organic SEO Effectiveness

Google Analytics (GA) can present an amount of data that is almost overwhelming for those new to using it.  For beginners, there are a few key performance indicators that are the most important in evaluating the result of Search Engine Optimization Efforts.

On the top GA menu, select a recent time frame to study, such as one week or one month.  Then right below, click compare to previous period.  Now, on the left hand menu at Google Analytics, scroll down to the acquisition section and choose overview.

The first key performance indicators to study to evaluate SEO results would be Sessions and New Users as well as Bounce Rate.  The first group of Other Traffic is not broken down and can be from email or other efforts.  In this article, I focus mostly on the Organic Search group because this measures the amount of traffic coming from natural search engine placement as separate from paid placement, social media work, or any other factor.

There is some overlap in the learning points in this article about SEO, which covers Visitor Acquisition – and a little about Visitor Engagement as well.  I touch on Engagement because getting visitors is only part of the story.  It is crucial that you realize there is only one main reason people use Search Engines.  Search engine users have a need, desire, or question they want to solve.  Generally they don’t want to find YOU or YOUR COMPANY NAME as much as they want to know something.  They don’t care how great your company is, or how many awards you have won until they know if they are going to get their need met on this web page.  So, when people feel tricked into visiting your site by ‘click-bait’ that creates an expectation which is not met on your site, they will BOUNCE off your site, going back to the search engine or another website ASAP.

What Can Be Learned From The Google Analytics Report Shown Below:

  • Organic Search Engine Traffic shown in the Sessions Column improved from 417 to 1083, an increase of roughly 160% compared to the previous 31 day period!  This indicates that something pretty powerful is happening!
    • Hopefully you know what you did to produce this result so that you can repeat it!
  • The New Users column shows a similar increase from 296 to 724, or roughly 145%
    • Again, hopefully you know what you did to produce this result so that you can repeat it!
  • The Bounce Rate column shows how many visitors clicked away from the site after looking at only one page.  This is a strong measure of several things that are related to SEO and to Visitor Engagement which is an indicator of how “Sticky” your site is.
    • With regard to SEO work it indicates if visitors found that your page actually provided what they were looking for.  Did it live up to the expectation created when they read the page description on the search engine result page?  If not they click away quickly.
      • Improving the <alt description> tag on your home page can control the expectation created by managing the ‘story’ told about your site in the few words under your domain name on the search results page.
      • Improving home page or landing page content so it matches the promise made in the search engine result page description is another way to make sure people stay on your site and start clicking around once they get there.
    • With regard to Engagement, which is not exactly SEO work but is also crucial to lead generation:
      • Simplifying the home page or landing page so that it is simple, direct, and immediately clear how to find the answer promised on the search engine result page is a good way to improve Bounce Rate.
        • If there is too much information on one page, a visitor can decide to look elsewhere for fast and simple answers that don’t require a lot of reading.
        • Keep it Simple, Sam is good advice these days when people have so much access to information at their fingertips. Overload happens fast.
        • Don’t overload your visitors.  Break complicated pages up into several pages and you will improve engagement and lead generation.
        • The faster they find what they want, the more likely they are to stay on the page and read or click something.  The more they read or click on a few pages, the more likely they will choose to contact you and become a lead.

A look at the Social row in the same Acquisition section will reveal similar details about how engaging your “click-bait” posts are in social media, and how well the page meets the expectation created.  Just as with inaccurate or ‘trick’ Search Engine Descriptions, visitors don’t stay long if they feel tricked into clicking something on social media just to see a page about how great you are.

For each row, such as Organic Search, or Social, you can click the blue highlighted row description and see a breakdown of which search engines or social media sites are sending traffic.  Once you see a particular search engine listed on the next page, such as Google, you can click that search engine name to find out which keywords have produced the traffic.

Google Analytics and Toledo SEO

Google Analytics and Toledo SEO Example

Yes, there is a lot more data to monitor in Google Analytics.  But until you have this part down pat, and make it work as a measurable proof that your Organic SEO efforts are on the right track, the other data will probably just distract your or make your eyes glaze over.  Once you have mastered the basics, then you can move into the deeper granularity of finer details.
